The whale's raft
Series: The Whale's Raft
Locations: East Greenland, Scoresbysund
History of the series
One man's misfortune is another man's gain. A Greenland whale, whose death cannot be interpreted, will be the main course in an endless buffet for 68 bears.
Near the mouth of the world's largest fjord, Scoresby Sund, a break-up that is already well underway is breaking up this thick ice pack. On the surface, a huge carcass of a Greenland whale lies amidst the icebergs. The odor emanating from it could be smelled by a bear dozens of kilometers away.
Some 68 polar bears were counted in the area, including more than 30 around the carcass. A Greenland whale, probably sick, died and was brought to the surface by the compression of the plates. This whale, measuring 14 meters and weighing an average of 50 tons, continues to play a major role in the food chain of this polar environment. As the plantigrade population remains fragile, it's comforting to see so much food for so many bears before summer. Indeed, this animal, ultimately marine, prefers its adventures on pack ice to those on land.
In view of the climate change it is undergoing, it also knows how to adapt by drifting on the ice floes, at times covering several hundred kilometers. A journey that only he knows how to enjoy.
